Medicaid 2007

The Medicaid Program provides medical assistance for certain individuals and families, with low incomes and resources. Medicaid eligibility is limited to individuals who fall into specific categories. Although the Federal government establishes general guidelines for the program, the Medicaid program requirements are actually established by each State. Whether or not a person can be eligible for Medicaid will depend on the State where he or she lives.

Eligibility:

Medicaid eligibility is limited to individuals who fall into specified categories. The federal statute identifies over 25 different eligibility categories for which federal funds are available. These categories include:

individuals with disabilities;

and individuals 65 or over

What Medicaid Covers:

Medicaid is a state administered program and each state sets its own guidelines. Certain services must be covered by the states and other services are optional and are elected by states. Medicaid was designed to pay for medical assistance for those of financial need.

Medicaid has very limited long-term care options in most states and is heavily geared toward skilled nursing facility care. It's also important to understand that in order for Medicaid to cover nursing home care, the facility must be a Medicaid facility. Not all nursing homes choose to be a Medicaid facility and therefore, many of the nicer, more comfortable nursing homes do not accept Medicaid.
